THE ART OF NOT BEING SEEN

Commissioned by Jo Gane / Birmingham Open Media for the JH Beck Archive.

The work was displayed with the following caption:

FELT BERET (Private Collection)

Obscured from view by the dark density of the artist's beret, Julian Henry Beck's missing sculpture has recently returned to view using a dupe-ray, a variant on infrared scanning and multi-spectral imaging technology. High-intensity x-rays from a particle accelerator have enabled conservators to strip away selected areas of historic photographs to make visible what lies beneath.

Arbiters of hindsight, coupled with an acute sense of spacial awareness, will have already noted how the sculptural form closely echoes that of the beret, and this is now thought to have been a visual trope. We are fortunate to be able to bring together this pioneering imagery and Beck’s original beret for the exhibition.
