In a time before the creation of epoxy resins, adhesives were composed of natural materials and therefore water-soluble. Valuable broken china was rarely discarded, rather it was repaired using drills and metal wires to stitch the pieces together. Crockery and decorative artifacts gained further life, albeit somewhat Frankenstein in appearance.
