THE SHOWMAN'S CURTAIN

Comparing the memoirs of Joseph Merrick (the Elephant Man), the showman Tom Norman and the surgeon Sir Frederick Treves, it is apparent that each ascribed history with a different account of their associations. The showman’s flamboyant language reveals how he established and operated his business while, significantly, his words aim to redress the balance and quantify a reputation sullied by Treves. Whatever their other achievements, Norman and Treves remain best known for their connection with Joseph Merrick - both put him on display - albeit on opposite sides of Whitechapel Road.
