Poison was the first choice for many murderers, particularly women, when methods and motivation were often determined by socio-historic events such as the growth in life insurance in the late-nineteenth century. As detection and technology increased in efficiency, avoiding capture became more difficult and criminals better educated and more devious. Prospective poisoners needed to understand how poisons worked and have the ability to develop logical crimes.
